The Impulse Model | Press
Press (the Media) is a powerful tool to raise awareness around human trafficking, and to help locate the missing persons. INGON has taken on the task of ensuring that media personnel understand the issue of human trafficking extremely well, report cases responsibly, and spread awareness about the issue effectively.
The Impulse Model emphasises, that while publishing stories on human trafficking, it is important that media personnel are sensitive towards the victims of human trafficking and their families. For example, the personal details of human trafficking victims should not be published in any case.
Media persons must also understand the trauma the victims have gone through, and in the event that they interview a survivor, they must understand what questions they can ask, and how to ask them, to avoid further victimisation of the individuals.
As part of our Impulse Model, INGON holds special workshops to train media personnel on how to publish articles and report on human trafficking. These trained media personnel then go on to become INGON Media Partners, with whom collaboration is established.
For example, partnering with the Press led to stakeholders taking appropriate legal action in the Meghalaya rat-hole mining case. Journalists from various media channels communicated public concerns about thousands of unregulated and unmonitored coal mines that India is home to. Not only are these mines unsafe to work in, especially for young children, but they also contribute to vast environmental damage in the form of water pollution, destruction of landscapes and endangering living species. News articles have also tracked and communicated the state government’s response to addressing the issue.
